Wolverhampton Wanderers are in talks to sign China international Wu Lei from La Liga strugglers Espanyol, according to Marca.

While Manchester United fans everywhere might bristle at the suggestion that the signing of South Korea star Park Ji-Sung was merely a marketing ploy designed to boost the club’s profile in the Far East, Wolves might find it rather more difficult to prove that the potential signing of Wu Lei has it’s root in sporting, rather than financial, purposes.

After all, Wolves’ Chinese owners, Fosun International, would love to have a player from their homeland in Nuno Espirito Santo’s side.

And Wu Lei might be the finest and most famous Chinese footballer of the generation.

With 67 caps and for the national side, he is also the all-time record goalscorer in China’s top-flight with 151 strikes recorded in less than 300 games.

Wu Lei has found goals harder to come by since moving to Spain, however. He has just three La Liga efforts under his belt this season, with the Barcelona-based outfit stuck to the bottom of the table with a hefty coat of superglue.

Marca claims that, with his contract due to expire later this year, Wu Lei has now held talks over a move to Wolves – though it is hard to imagine Raul Jimenez glancing nervously over his shoulder.

Interestingly, the Black Country giants were also linked with the 27-year-old back in 2018, with Fosun convinced that his arrival would make Wolves the talk of eastern Asia (Express and Star).
