Wolves are reportedly still in talks to sign Belgian international Jason Denayer on a free transfer, with Aston Villa and Newcastle United also linked with the former Olympique Lyonnais star in the summer window.

According to Het Nieuwsblad, Bruno Lage’s side remain in talks with the 27-year-old centre-back with a breakthrough yet to be made between the two parties, with Wolves keen to sign the defender after already adding Diego Costa to their ranks after the closure of the transfer window.

Denayer has been a free agent since the end of last season when the former Celtic star left Lyon after the expiration of his contract, yet despite reported interest from the likes of Newcastle and Villa, the defender is yet to sign for a new club, with Wolves seemingly attempting to win the race now.

A 35-cap international with Belgium, the defensive titan was key to Lyon’s run to the 2020 UEFA Champions League semi-finals, yet even with Denayer now a free agent, clubs are seemingly struggling to sign the centre-back, with Wolves yet to make a breakthrough in talks with the centre-back.

Indeed, Denayer was one of Lyon’s highest-paid players last season, and as per the report, wages could be a reason why Wolves are finding it hard to strike an agreement with the defender over a potential deal, with the scope of Lage’s sporting project also a potential roadblock for the defender.

Whilst Wolves do have time on their hands in a deal to sign Denayer, the Premier League side will seemingly what a transfer concluded sooner rather than later, and the 27-year-old seemingly has to be sold on the project if he is to join the Molineux side in the coming days.

Sporting reasons and the belief in a project is always a good reason for a player to decide on whether they want to sign for a new club or not, and for Denayer, the centre-back weighing up this option with Wolves will seemingly see the defender join the Premier League side in the coming days.

After all, Wolves’ project under Lage is quite an exciting one, and whilst their form this season is yet to pick up, Denayer can play a big role in turning the club’s fortunes around, with the centre-back more than ready to play in the English top-flight.
