Report: Wolves could trigger 17-goal star’s £55m clause if key man leaves Molineux

Lucas Ocampos has a £55 million release clause in his contract and Wolverhampton Wanderers could be in a position to trigger it if Adama Traore leaves Molineux this summer, according to La Razon.

There are a lot of ‘ifs’ and ‘maybes’ in this deal.

While Nuno Espirito Santo has made it clear that he wants more quantity and quality to pad out one of the smallest squads in the Premier League, you won’t find many clubs willing to shatter their transfer record in an era of budget cuts and furlough.

But if (there’s that word again) Traore is snapped up by one of the biggest clubs on Earth, Wolves will have an almighty wad of cash burning a hole in their back pocket.

And with some of the more reputable publications around suggesting that Ocampos has been lined up as Traore’s successor, we cannot automatically rule out the prospect of the Argentine swapping Sevilla for Molineux in an historic £55 million deal.

Ocampos is hardly an identical footballer to Traore – who is? – but what he lacks in searing pace he makes up for in goalscoring.

The former Marseille, Milan and Monaco winger enjoyed the best season of his career in 2019/20, scoring a personal-best 17 goals for a Sevilla side who finished fourth in La Liga and won the Europa League yet again.

The last of those 17 goals was a brilliantly guided glancing header which knocked Wolves out of Europe in the quarter-finals a fortnight ago.
