Wolverhampton Wanderers have emerged as shock destination for Jan Vertonghen after the Premier League veteran bid farewell to Tottenham Hotspur, according to Il Messaggero.

Speaking to talkSPORT on Tuesday, the 33-year-old made it clear that he will not be on the breadline for long.

Vertonghen suggested that he plans to find a new club ‘sooner rather than later’.

And while speculation suggests that Italy will be his destination with Roma and Inter Milan both sniffing around, the chance to extend his stay in England, and leave Jose Mourinho red faced, might be too good to turn down.

The 118-cap Belgian international fell out of favour under Mourinho in recent months, with Spurs opting against extending a contract which expired after Sunday’s 1-1 final day draw with Crystal Palace.

But, even at 33, the left-footed Vertonghen still has a lot left in the tank.

His versatility, expert positional sense and fine passing range making him a perfect fit for Nuno Espirito Santo’s three-man backline at Wolves.

Il Messaggero reports that the Black Country giants are hoping inject some top-level experience into an exciting but inexperienced side with Vertonghen in their sights.

Romain Saiss has filled in effectively in Nuno’s back three in recent months, though the Moroccan international is a defensive midfielder by trade – not to mention right-footed.

So Vertonghen, a natural left-footer, would undoubtedly enhance an already impressive defence alongside Willy Boly and the inspirational Conor Coady.

Tuttomercatoweb reported in May that the former Ajax youngster, who scored a last-gasp winner against Wolves in December, wants £50,000-a-week from his next club.
