Atletico Madrid starlet Diogo Jota could be the next big money signing to grace Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Since Chinese conglomerate Fosun International completed their takeover of Wolves last summer, and super-agent Jorge Mendes began pulling the strings in the transfer market, the club have shattered their transfer record on three occasions.
On deadline day last summer, Wolves paid £7 million to land Portuguese Under-21 starlet Ivan Caveleiro from Monaco (Birmingham Mail). Six months later, they splashed out £13 million to turn Helder Costa’s loan deal from Benfica permanent (BBC).
Just a few weeks ago, they invested £15.8 million to land highly-rated Porto wonderkid Ruben Neves (Daily Mail), completing the most expensive transfer in the history of the Championship.
Neves became the youngest captain in Champions League history against Maccabi tel Aviv in 2015
And it appears that they will not stop there. A deal to sign Atletico Madrid’s Diogo Jota, a 20-year-old Portuguese winger with huge potential, appears to be on the verge of completion, the Express and Star reporting that he will arrive on loan with an option to buy.
Needless to say, that is a huge fee for a Championship club and one that no team in the second tier would have a hope of matching this summer. It would also pile the pressure on manager Nuno Espirito Santo to guide the big-spending Wolves to the Premier League.
Nuno knows Jota well, however, the winger spending last season on loan at his FC Porto side and scoring nine goals in all competitions. Therefore, Jota may be the third former Nuno player to arrive at Molineux this summer after Neves and powerful centre-back Willy Boly.
Jota never made an appearance for Atletico.
