Wolves are reportedly considering a move to sign free agent striker Diego Costa, with the Spanish international previously on Arsenal and Newcastle United’s radar this year.
According to the Athletic, Bruno Lage’s side are eyeing a move for the 33-year-old attacker after summer signing Sasa Kalajdzic picked up an ACL injury in his Premier League debut for Wolves, with Costa being lined up as a replacement for the Austrian striker as well as competition for Raul Jimenez.
Costa has been a free agent since the start of the year after the former Chelsea striker’s contract with Atletico Mineiro was terminated in January, though despite being a reported target for the likes of Arsenal and Newcastle, the veteran attacker is yet to be signed by anyone, though Wolves could soon change that.
A client of Jorge Mendes, who has had a huge influence over Wolves’ signings in recent years, Costa could soon be heading to Molineux should the Premier League side look to bring the 33-year-old to the club as a replacement for Kalajdzic, who is expected to be out well into 2023.
Indeed, Costa would be a solid backup option for Jimenez with Hwang Hee-chan still on Wolves’ books after the South Korean striker failed to secure a move to Leeds United on deadline day, and for Lage, signing the Brazilian-born attacker could be a coup for his squad.
Hailed as a ‘powerful’ player by Bleacher Report, Costa is a proven Premier League striker who guided Chelsea to two titles during his last spell in England, and whilst the attacker is now potentially returning to the United Kingdom as an older player, his impact on Wolves could still be massive.
Wolves signing Diego Costa could be a wise move from Bruno Lage

Losing Kalajdzic so soon into his Wolves career is a killer blow for the striker and for Lage, yet signing Costa as a short-term replacement could be a great move for the Molineux side, who could still have something left in the tank to shine in the Premier League.
After all, Costa was a menace during his spell at Chelsea, and if Wolves can recapture even a fraction of the form and the chaos the striker provided whilst in west London, the Premier League side will have one impressive attacker to cover for Kalajdzic until 2023.
