Wolverhampton Wanderers are confident of sealing a £22 million deal for Goncalo Guedes, with Valencia coach Jose Bordalas ready to accept defeat in his attempts to retain the Portugal international, as reported by Goal Espana.

Two years after firing home a laser-guided winner against the Netherlands in the inaugural UEFA Nations League final, Guedes did not play a single minute as Portugal crashed out of Euro 2020 at the round-of-16 stage.

In fact, the former Paris Saint-Germain winger was left out of Fernando Santos’s matchday squad for three of Portugal’s four games at the tournament.

As you might have guessed given the nature of our intro, Guedes has struggled since breaking Holland hearts at the Estadio do Dragao two years ago, his development plateauing on the Castellon coast.

He missed much of the 2019/20 season with a niggling ankle problem and, after returning to action following five months out, appeared to lack the speed, incision and explosiveness that made him one of La Liga’s most exciting attackers during his first season in Spain.

At just 24, however, Guedes has plenty of time on his side. And a fresh start – at a club slightly more stable than an eternally volatile Valencia – may be exactly what the doctor ordered.

Guedes has been linked with a move to Molineux throughout the summer and, according to Goal, there is a growing confidence that Wolves will finally secure the services of their long-term transfer target.

A Jorge Mendes client, Guedes will be sold for somewhere in the region £22 million – a windfall that would go some way to easing the precarious financial situation the perennially cash-strapped Valencia find themselves in.

Los Che coach Jose Bordalas admitted recently that he hopes to retain arguably the most gifted attacking talent at his disposal.

But the former Getafe boss is under no illusions. He knows Valencia may have no choice but to sell, with Wolves preparing an offer that the club simply cannot refuse.
