Wolverhampton Wanderers have approached Omar Mascarell about a summer move to the Premier League with the Schalke captain planning to leave the crisis-hit German giants, as reported by AS.

Things are going to become worse before they get better.

Mascarell may be planning a fresh start away from the all-consuming black hole that is Schalke 04 – but he has to face the ignominy of relegation first.

The Gelsenkirchen giants are nailed to the bottom of the table accumulating just ten points – and one win – from 24 Bundesliga games.

Mascarell will go down in history as captain of arguably the worst Schalke side in their 116-year history.

However, according to reports in Spain, the Tenerife-born 28-year-old still has plenty of admirers on the continent, even if the 2020/21 campaign has been one to forget for the talented midfielder.

AS claims Wolves have already made their interest known.

And, with just 16 months left on his contract, Schalke are willing to consider cut-price bids of about £4 million.

A hard-working defensive midfielder renowned for his passing range and tough tackling, Mascarell could be the perfect foil for the more adventurous Ruben Neves in Nuno Espirito Santo’s two-man engine room.

Despite their shared Iberian heritage, the Neves-Joao Moutinho partnership continues to underwhelm and Mascarell would give Wolves a different option in the engine room.

The former Spain U20 ace has experienced English football too. He made 30 appearances for Derby County during a loan spell from Real Madrid in 2014/15.
