Wolverhampton Wanderers were keen to take the Scotland international off the hands of Aston Villa.
Aston Villa have rebuffed a ‘tentative’ loan enquiry from Wolverhampton Wanderers for striker Ross McCormack, reports the Express & Star.
McCormack’s position is said to be a priority area for Wolves manager Paul Lambert to strengthen in January, along with the Scot’s defence.
No Wolves striker has scored under Lambert
However, Villa have reportedly informed their former boss that only a permanent deal for the 30-year-old, who joined from Fulham in a £12 million deal last summer.
McCormack has made just 12 starts for the Villans so far, scoring three times, but is set for an extended run in Steve Bruce’s side with Jonathan Kodjia and Jordan Ayew both off to this month’s African Cup of Nations, while Rudy Gestede is said to be on the verge of a move to Middlesbrough.
McCormack has struggled since moving to Aston Villa
And with Lambert also stating that the January window will be neither ‘gung-ho’ nor ‘crazy’ for Wolves, the 47-year-old will perhaps now seek alternative striking targets.
Meanwhile, Wolves’ alleged interest in Ipswich defender Luke Chambers and another Aston Villa player, midfielder Ashley Westwood, has been deemed by the Express & Star as ‘wide of the mark’.
