A report claims the Mackems will pay up the final year of Jordi Gomez’s contract, with the Latics set to pounce for Spaniard and Leon Osman.
Gomez could be allowed to leave Sunderland
Wigan Athletic want to take Jordi Gomez off Sunderland’s hands and are also keen on released Everton midfielder Leon Osman, a report in Wednesday’s Sun newspaper (page 55) claims.
The Latics, a Premier League side and winners of the FA Cup as recently as 2013, were promoted back to the Championship as League One winners in May.
And Gomez, who was part of that FA Cup success, is wanted by former team-mate Gary Caldwell, along with three other midfielders, according to the Sun.
Gomez spent five years at Wigan
In terms of the Spaniard, Latics boss Caldwell could be in luck, with the tabloid reporting that Sunderland are prepared to pay up the remainder of his £30,000-a-week contract, which expires in 2017.
It adds that Wigan-born Osman could also be bound for the DW Stadium, along with Barnsley’s Connor Hourihane and Alex Gilbey of Colchester United.
Osman is being released after 16 seasons at Goodison Park
The Sun reports that a £400,000 bid has been tabled for Hourihane, while Gilbey is out of contract at the Colchester Community Stadium, though Wigan would need to pay compensation to land the 21-year-old.
Hourihane’s Barnsley were also promoted last term
