Wigan Athletic are ready to move for Aston Villa right-back Alan Hutton if they cannot land Hearts’ Callum Paterson, according to the Scottish Sun.
The Latics are claimed to have seen an improved bid of £700,000, plus a 20 per cent sell-on clause, turned down by the Scottish side on Wednesday.
And that is some way off the Jambos’ apparent £1.2 million asking price, which could prompt manager Gary Caldwell to look elsewhere.
According to the Scottish Sun, the former Scotland defender is keen on a reunion with Hutton – his old international colleague – and the feeling is said to be mutual.
Hutton began the campaign as Villa’s first-choice right back, however, this week’s capture of Leicester City man Ritchie De Laet could render the 31-year-old expendable as the transfer window reaches its climax.
The report adds that Wigan would prefer to sign Paterson – but only if Hearts lower their asking price. The 21-year-old, who won his first Scotland cap earlier this year, was linked with a move to Celtic by the Scottish Sun last month.
