Sunderland ended their interest in DeAndre Yedlin earlier this summer and have turned to former Liverpool youngster Javi Manquillo instead.
Sunderland are in talks to sign former Liverpool right-back Javier Manquillo as last-season’s loanee De Andre Yedlin prepares to move to North East rivals Newcastle United.
USA international Yedlin (below) impressed in patches on loan from Tottenham last season but is yet to sign for the Rafa Benitez’ Championship side to replace departing Daryl Janmaat.
According to the Chronicle, Sam Allardyce’s accession to the England role, coupled with financial restrictions within the club, meant Sunderland ended their interest in 23-year-old earlier this summer.
However, with Manchester United graduate Donald Love (below) struggling alarmingly in his first two appearances, Sky Sports are reporting that David Moyes’ side have turned their attentions to Manquillo to reinforce a defence beset by injuries and departures.
The former Spanish Under-21 international, who is currently under contract at Atletico Madrid, had a two-year loan with Liverpool cut short after featuring just 10 times in the Premier League for Brendan Rodgers in 2014/15.
Manquillo suffered the nadir of his short-lived Anfield career against West Ham at Upton Park in September, hauled off just 20 minutes in with Liverpool 2-0 down.
However, Moyes looks set to give the youngster a second chance to prove himself in England despite Sunderland badly lacking experience in defensive areas following injuries to John O’Shea (below), Lee Cattermole and Jan Kirchoff.
The arrival of an unproven 23-year-old is unlikely to pacify a fanbase who booed their team off the pitch following Sunday’s 2-1 home defeat to newly promoted rivals Middlesbrough.
