According to The Athletic, Newcastle United had loan bids for Conor Gallagher, Christian Pulisic and Ainsley Maitland-Niles turned down towards the end of the transfer window.

Gallagher and Pulisic have remained at Chelsea, so perhaps those deals were never on the cards.

However, Arsenal eventually shipped Maitland-Niles out to Southampton – so why wasn’t Newcastle’s bid for the ‘huge talent’ accepted?

Well, according to this report both Arsenal and Chelsea weren’t keen to do any deals with Newcastle as they see them as an imminent threat to the established order in the Premier League.

The Magpies are, of course, now the richest club in the world, and while they sit in 12th at the moment in the Premier League, their early-season performances against both Manchester City and Liverpool have shown that they’re capable of bloodying a few noses.

Arsenal and Chelsea are seemingly threatened by Newcastle’s potential to be one of the Premier League big-boys, and while that upward trajectory is seemingly inevitably, the current top six aren’t keen to accelerate Newcastle’s rise to the top.

The Magpies didn’t manage to pull off any Deadline Day deals and are seemingly still short in a couple of areas, but, it has to be said that they had a brilliant transfer window.

They broke their own transfer record on a potentially world-class striker, they signed one of the brightest defenders in Europe, while they’ve also brought in an England international goalkeeper with bags of experience at this level.

This squad may not be ready to challenge for a Champions League spot yet – and perhaps that may have been different if Arsenal or Chelsea were willing to play ball, but regardless of not being too active in the final week, this is a squad that Newcastle can build on in years to come and eventually become title challengers.
