Many at Arsenal were left ‘unimpressed’ with the club’s European Super League plans after chief executive Vinai Venkatesham failed to address a myriad of concerns, as reported by the Athletic.
One by one, the dominoes started to fall.
Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal – the oh-so inappropriately named ‘big six’ – all pulled out of the doomed European Super League after just 48 hours on Tuesday night, scampering away with their tails between their legs.
At least the Gunners had the good grace to apologise for putting their long-suffering supporters through the mill.
That is more than can be said for the some of their cash-grabbing Premier League rivals.
While Arsenal supporters have welcomed the collapse of the so-called European Super League, you would imagine that the reaction behind the scenes, at the Emirates and at London Colney, was equally joyous.
The Athletic reports that many members of the Arsenal staff were displeased with the proposals, and a conference call with Venkatesham did little to change that.
The report claims that they were left ‘unimpressed’ with the talks, feeling that their ‘questions and concerns’ were not addressed sufficiently.
After a miserable 12 months – the shameless furloughing of staff members, the dreadful results, the continued silence on the terraces, the contentious departure of the club’s long-serving mascot – at least Tuesday night gave the supporters something to cheer.
Sometimes the good guys do win.
