As we all know, signing players from the Eredivisie comes with a risk. And Manchester United’s decision to sign Depay looks worse by the day.

Roma could offer Memphis Depay an alternative route out of Manchester United in January as they look to compensate for the loss of Mohamad Salah to the African Cup of Nations in the New Year, according to the Corriere Dello Sport.

The Dutch international has featured for just 71 minutes in all competitions this season as he falls ever further down the pecking order under Jose Mourinho, but was expected to move Everton in January after Ronald Koeman admitted his interest in signing the forward.

Depay himself refused to rule out a temporary switch down the M62 in January after scoring a brilliant double to help the Netherlands avoid a humiliating draw with Luxembourg in their World Cup qualifier at the weekend.

However, The Mirror claimed recently that Mourinho is unwilling to sanction Depay’s departure to a Premier League rival due to fears that he could have a crucial say in the season’s conclusion, delivering a blow to Everton’s hopes of bagging a man who became one of Europe’s most sought after players after netting 28 times in a prolific final season with PSV.

Therefore, Corriere Dello Sport report that this could force Depay towards a move to Serie A side Roma, who are desperately searching for an orthodox winger in January as former Chelsea forward Salah, who has thrived under Luciano Spalletti this term, packs his bags for Egypt’s African Cup of Nations campaign at the start of 2017.

Roma have reportedly been working quietly on a deal for some time to avoid sparking the interest of other interested parties.

Furthermore, Depay is represented by the Sports Entertainment group, who count current Giallorossi players Thomas Vermaelen and Kevin Strootman among their list of clients.
