Some Tottenham Hotspur players could not believe Jose Mourinho said ‘same coach, different players’ after they failed to beat Newcastle United last weekend, the Independent report.
The latest jibe was far from the first time that Mourinho has criticised Tottenham’s players in public, but this one apparently caused particular shock among the squad.
The Independent say that Tottenham’s players still have ‘mixed’ feelings towards Mourinho, though.
Doubts remain over the Portuguese boss, but he has not lost the entire dressing room at Spurs at this stage.
Instead there are reportedly differing views among the clubs players over whether he is the right man to take them forward.
Mourinho’s problem is that he is now rapidly losing popularity with Tottenham’s fans.
The experienced boss may have Spurs in the League Cup final, but there have simply been too many unconvincing performances this season to suggest that progress in being made.
Tottenham have now been dumped out of the Europa League and the FA Cup, while their top four hopes are hanging by a thread.
Spurs, despite all their frailties, are just three points off the top four and have a winnable set of remaining fixtures this term, and if Mourinho could get them back into the Champions League he may argue that he has made a positive impact.
Tottenham are next in action on Sunday, when they take on Manchester United.
