Leaving the performance aside, there was one big positive for Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday night.
The North Londoners, under caretaker boss Ryan Mason, lost 1-0 to Manchester City at Wembley in a Carabao Cup final.
Tottenham were relatively toothless and with just one shot on target in 90 minutes, there wasn’t much to celebrate for the Spurs fans in attendance.
And yet, the fact that there were Lilywhites supporters at the stadium – 2,00o to be specific – represents a big positive in itself and a symbol of much wider progress.
It was a small but significant step in a return to normality and despite the defeat, Tottenham fans certainly made themselves heard – especially when Dele Alli was near them.
According to Football London, the supporters chanted Alli’s name when the Spurs attacker was warming up alongside Gareth Bale.
The 24-year-old acknowledged the gesture and applauded them, the report adds.
Alli was only given six minutes of action and although that’ll disappoint him, he can take heart in the knowledge that many of the club’s fans still love him following what’s been his worst season in North London.
