It is claimed in the Athletic that when Newcastle United’s players were told Steve Bruce had left the message was not greeted with euphoria behind the scenes.

Bruce leaves Newcastle

Amanda Staveley was the first to let Newcastle’s squad know that Bruce had gone in the canteen.

However, while his dismissal did apparently ‘buoy’ the mood in Newcastle training, it was not greeted with celebration.

Indeed the latest report suggests that plenty fo Newcastle’s squad messaged Bruce privately to say goodbye and good luck.

Allan Saint Maximin is the only Newcastle player to send a heartfelt message to Bruce publicly.

But it seems that plenty of the Magpies’ squad still had some good-will towards him, even at the end of his tenure.

Still searching for a replacement

Newcastle are now still looking for Bruce’s replacement, with Graeme Jones in temporary charge as things stand.

Jones led Newcastle to a 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace in his first game in charge at the weekend.

Newcastle took a more defensive approach in the contest, as they let go of possession to fight their way to a point.

Newcastle’s tactics would have been unlikely to be accepted over the long-term, but they may be needed right now as the side must collect some points to get away from danger.

The Magpies have just four points from their first nine games, which has left them firmly stuck in the relegation zone at the time being.
