Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy told close contacts that he would keep Jose Mourinho until the end of the season as little as two weeks ago, the Telegraph suggest.

Mourinho was sacked as Tottenham manager yesterday morning, after a string of bad results and poor performances.

But it seems that was never actually Levy’s plan, as he wanted to give the Portuguese boss the season.

However, after a draw with Everton, Levy decided to pull the trigger.

When push has come to shove before the Tottenham chairman has never been one to delay making tough decisions.

And even with a League Cup final on the horizon, that still was not enough to save Mourinho from the chop.

Tottenham are now taking their time to assess their options ahead of the next campaign, with Ryan Mason in temporary charge for the coming months.

Mason has worked with Tottenham’s youngsters before, but is now facing a real challenge, after stepping in at such a pressurised time.
