Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce has not promised that Joe Willock will be a permanent starter at St. James’ Park, the Athletic report.
It was Arteta who convinced Willock to move to Newcastle, with the Arsenal boss keen to get the youngster some more regular game time.
But Bruce has insisted that Willock’s spot in Newcastle’s starting line-up will be earned by merit, rather than given to him.
Bruce has told Arteta that Willock will be given first-team chances, and it will then be up to the youngster to prove his worth.
The hope at Arsenal is that the 21-year-old can really prove his quality while with Newcastle.
Willock has shown his ability in flashes with Arsenal this term, with his form in the Europa League particularly impressive.

However, he is yet to really stamp his authority on their Premier League side, with other options now favoured in midfield.
If Willock can impress at Newcastle, he still seems to be a part of Arsenal’s longer-term plans.
And Newcastle should benefit from having him around until the end of the campaign.
Bruce’s side have needed more attacking thrust and dynamism from midfield, and the hope is that Willock will be able to offer them that in the weeks ahead.
