Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce was the man who persuaded Mike Ashley into buying Callum Wilson for him, the Telegraph report.

Bruce apparently said to Ashley that Wilson still has his best years ahead of him and that he was his first choice striker to sign for Newcastle, even though their scouting department had put together some other suggestions.

Ashley has now backed his manager, with Wilson on the verge of a £20 million move to Newcastle now.

The signing should delight Bruce, who has been keen to bring Premier League experience to St. James’ Park this summer.

Indeed, the same report claims that Bruce said to Ashley in their first talk about recruitment that he didn’t want to risk bringing players in from abroad this summer.

That tactic seems to have been listened to, as Newcastle are now closing on deals for Wilson, Ryan Fraser and Jamal Lewis.

The triple swoop looks like superb business for the Magpies, which should make them much stronger next term.

It should be noted that all three of Newcastle’s incoming addition possess lightening pace, and Bruce could now have one of the quickest teams in the Premier League at his disposal.
