Report: Western Melbourne bid for Celtic’s Scott Brown dealt blow

Western Melbourne are reportedly hoping to sign Celtic midfielder Scott Brown, but their plans have suffered a setback.

According to a report from the Daily Record, Western Melbourne’s hopes of luring Scott Brown away from Celtic have suffered a setback due to having a funding application rejected.

Brown’s Parkhead future appears to be a major talking point with his Hoops deal set to expire at the end of the season, and Western Melbourne hoping to have the 33-year-old in their midfield for their first A-League campaign later this year.

However, the Daily Record reports that Western Melbourne had applied to Football Federation Australia for help with funding a move for Brown, who would have become their marquee player.

But the Record adds that that application has been rejected by the FFA despite their desire to see the club get a deal for the Celtic star across the line.

It is not clear from the report whether Western Melbourne still have options that could enable Brown to arrive, but it must boost Celtic’s chances of keeping their skipper regardless of how likely they already were to agree an extension.

Keeping Brown will be a boost for Brendan Rodgers’ side. He has unquestionably been one of the Scottish Premiership’s best players over the last decade, and looks to have the ability to continue going for several more years. And given how influential he is as a leader, it will provide a lift if he ends up penning fresh terms with the Hoops.
