West Ham United winger Robert Snodgrass is close to completing a season-long loan move to Aston Villa – a deal which could cue Ross McCormack’s exit to Sunderland, according to Sky Sports (09:52).

It is claimed Snodgrass will undergo a medical with the Villans on Friday afternoon, ahead of reunion with his former Hull City boss Steve Bruce.

Bruce is said to have fought off two of his old clubs, Sunderland and Birmingham City, to sign the Scotland international, who was promoted with the Tigers in his previous season at Championship level.

Sky Sports reports that Villa will have an option to buy Snodgrass at the end of his loan spell, which commences seven months after his £7.5 million transfer from Hull to West Ham.

McCormack, who cost Villa £12 million a year ago, is said to be wanted by his former boss Simon Grayson at Sunderland, and it is claimed the Snodgrass deal will ‘open the door’ for the Mackems to take the 31-year-old.

Speaking to Talksport on Thursday, Bruce confirmed his interest in signing Arsenal and England midfielder Jack Wilshere, but conceded: “I don’t know whether we’re capable of landing him and let’s not forget he’s only 25.

“People have said that I’ve got millions and millions to spend, where it’s been the complete opposite.

“With financial fair play, unfortunately we haven’t got millions and millions to spend so I’ve got to be a little bit prudent, see what we can do and try and balance the books.”
