West Ham United defender Reece Oxford is reportedly closing in on sealing an £8 million exit ahead of the summer.
Reece Oxford is closing in on agreeing an £8 million move away from West Ham, with Augsburg set to make his loan move permanent at the end of the season, according to a report from Sky Sports.
Oxford has become something of a forgotten man at the London Stadium having once been considered perhaps the brightest talent in the Premier League following his senior debut for the Hammers.
The 20-year-old did not make a single first-team appearance for the Irons this season before his January move to the Bundesliga. He has played six times for Augsburg in the top flight, but was sent off in the 5-1 defeat away at Freiburg in February.
But while he may not have made a major impact in Germany, Sky Sports reports that Augsburg are close to agreeing a permanent deal for the West Ham youngster that could see the Irons earn £8 million.
Despite his potential, it seems likely that there will be a large number of West Ham fans who feel that that is a good piece of business to agree that fee for Oxford. He is not in Manuel Pellegrini’s plans, and it is clear that some doubt whether he will ever become the player that he looked destined to be when he burst onto the scene as a 16-year-old.
However, there may also be those who feel that it is a disappointing piece of news. It is telling that a handful of managers have now not put their faith in the defender, but it is not the way that many Hammers supporters would have expected Oxford’s career to play out when he pocketed Mesut Ozil on his top flight debut.
