Could Andy Carroll make a surprise return to Newcastle this summer?

Andy Carroll has been linked with a shock return to Newcastle United, by The Sun.

The striker has struggled with injuries since joining West Ham from Liverpool, and faces an uncertain future with Sam Allardyce sacked by the Hammers and a new boss set to be appointed.

Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has vowed to invest in the club after their near-miss with relegation, with The Mirror reporting they would be looking to ‘buy British’.

Compared with Newcastle’s strikers in 2014/15, Carroll’s goals per game ratio ranks only below Papiss Cisse, with summer signing Emmanuel Riviere particularly struggling.

It is unclear how much the Hammers would want for the striker, who was part of Roy Hodgson’s England squad for Euro 2012, but has been kept out of the international set up by injuries ever since.

The Sun‘s report claims Carroll is keen on a return, and would even consider a pay cut to do so.

He was sold in 2011 to Liverpool for £35 million, a fee he never lived up to, with fitness struggles then too playing a part.

Former Newcastle boss Alan Pardew predicted last November that Carroll would one day return to play for the club again, quoted by The Mirror: “I hope he does come back to his home town. He has got that love here.”
