West Ham United are interested in signing Manchester City midfielder Yangel Herrera, according to Goal.

It’s claimed that City are keeping tabs on Herrera ahead of possibly bringing him into their first-team next season.

The 22-year-old is currently on loan at Granada in Spain, meaning he will be facing City’s bitter rivals Manchester United in the Europa League tonight.

With Fernandinho’s contract expiring this summer, Herrera may have a chance to come into the City midfield – or he could be moved on.

West Ham are thought to be keen on signing Herrera, with Southampton are also interested in landing the Venezuela international.

A combative midfielder with a fine passing range and a dangerous long-range shot in his arsenal, Herrera has excelled for Granada this season.

Signed from Atletico Valenzuela in 2017, Herrera hasn’t yet made his City debut, and has been out on loan with New York City, Huesca and Granada in recent times.

This feels a little like the Douglas Luiz situation in 2019, in that he returned from loans and then joined a Premier League rival in Aston Villa, with a buy-back clause.

West Ham may see Herrera as competition for Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek in midfield, and it would be fascinating to see whether they would accept buy-back terms should City demand them.
