West Ham United are hoping that they will be able to keep Adrian beyond the duration of his current contract with the club.

According to a report from Football London, West Ham are still hoping that they can agree a long-term contract extension with Adrian, but talks over a new deal are yet to begin.

It has been a turbulent season for the Spaniard. He spent much of the early part of the campaign as Joe Hart’s understudy at the London Stadium. However, Hart’s unconvincing form combined with some inspired performances from the 31-year-old when he got a chance in the cup meant that he got an opportunity in the Premier League from December.

After an initially bright run in the side as number one, the shaky form seemed to emerge once again and Hart returned to the team for the game against Burnley immediately before the international break.

A poor performance from Hart means that it is not clear who will be David Moyes’ number one when the Hammers host fellow strugglers Southampton this weekend. But it appears that the Irons do want to agree a long-term deal with Adrian.

Football London reports that his current deal expires in 2019, but West Ham are keen to agree an extension with Adrian – though talks are yet to begin with the stopper.

Smart move from West Ham?

When Adrian is at his best, he is a very good goalkeeper. However, West Ham fans have become used to expecting the former Real Betis ace’s form to dip, and thus, news of the club’s intent to extend his contract may not be received particularly well.

He is already contracted until 2019, so even with Hart only on loan, they do have some security with his situation. If West Ham are going to progress, you would argue that they should find a stopper this summer who relegates Adrian to the number two role and find themselves in a position that allows them to reassess the situation just before his current deal expires in 2019.
