Could Joao Mario’s impending loan switch to West Ham United trigger Inter’s move for the midfielder?

Joao Mario of FC Internazionale Milano looks on during the Serie A match between FC Internazionale and Spal at Stadio Giuseppe Meazza on September 10, 2017 in Milan, Italy.

Sky Sports is reporting that Joao Mario is in London today to complete his loan move from Inter Milan to West Ham United for the remainder of the season.

The 25-year-old winger cost Inter £35m in 2016 – fee reported by Sky Sports – and was a member of the Portugal side that won the European Championships that same year.

While signing Mario represents a coup for the Hammers, his arrival could prove to be a double-edged sword as it enables Inter to go after a long-term West Ham target.

Italian publication Gazzetta dello Sport understands that Inter now have the space and funds to make a move for Sporting Lisbon powerhouse William Carvalho.

The report adds that Carvalho is on a shortlist of midfield options for Luciano Spaletti, which also includes Lokomotiv Moscow’s Manuel Fernandes and Wylan Cyprien of Nice.

West Ham United owner David Sullivan looks on during the Carabao Cup Fourth Round match between Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United at Wembley Stadium on October 25, 2017 in London,...

According to Sky Sports, West Ham tried to sign Carvalho in the summer but talks broke down with Sporting, who later criticised the club’s co-owners David Sullivan.

While West Ham face disappointment if they miss out on the 25-year-old, Mario is a more pressing signing because of a spate of injuries to David Moyes’ attacking players.
