According to the London Evening Standard, West Ham United will appoint a Director of Football this summer to take some pressure off their under-fire board.
The Hammers endured a torrid weekend, as they were not only thumped 3-0 at home by Burnley, but also saw fans stage protests and pitch invasions as angst towards the West Ham board grows.
There is a firm belief that David Gold and David Sullivan have sold a lie to fans about the move from Upton Park to the London Stadium, and Sullivan’s work in the transfer market hasn’t helped matters.
Since leaving Upton Park, Sullivan has overseen deals for the likes of Havard Nordtveit, Sofiane Feghouli, Gokhan Tore, Jonathan Calleri, Andre Ayew, Jose Fonte, Robert Snodgrass and Joe Hart, providing little success with those signings.
Now, it seems that West Ham are planning something of a restructure, as the London Evening Standard report that the club intend to appoint a Director of Football this summer to take over from Sullivan on the transfer front.
An ‘experienced’ director will allegedly be targeted, and will bring a massive change to West Ham’s summer transfer plans, whether or not manager David Moyes keeps his job beyond the end of the season.
Given criticism for his signings in recent times, fans will almost certainly be delighted to hear that Sullivan is stepping back somewhat, bringing a new approach to recruitment this summer.
It’s unclear whether West Ham will look domestically for their appointment or look to Europe, but it seems that big changes are coming at the London Stadium this summer.
