West Ham United are trying to sign Hwang Hee-chan from RB Leipzig before the January transfer window closes next week, according to Eurosport.

It has been reported that West Ham believe that Hwang could play in a similar role to Michail Antonio and want to secure his services in the coming days.

The report has claimed that Leipzig are open to sending the 25-year-old forward out on loan this month, having signed him from RB Salzburg in the summer of 2020 as a replacement for Timo Werner, who joined Chelsea.

Although West Ham are hopeful of securing a deal, there is interest from Bundesliga club Mainz in the South Korea international, according to the report.

Hwang Hee-chan Stats

According to WhoScored, Hwang has played just 136 minutes in the Bundesliga and 45 minutes in the Champions League for Leipzig so far this season.

Underwhelming signing for West Ham United

Hwang has not played much football this season, and the South Korea international would be an underwhelming signing for West Ham.

True, the Hammers need to bring in a striker following the departure of Sebastien Haller to Ajax earlier this month, but the London club should really be aiming higher.

What West Ham need is an out-and-out striker who can make an immediate impact at the London Stadium and help their push for the Champions League places.
