The Manchester United defender could have a difficult choice to make, with West Ham United and West Bromwich Albion both said to be in contention for his signature.

West Ham United and West Bromwich Albion are the early front-runners to sign Manchester United defender Chris Smalling, according to the Irish Sun.

It is claimed that Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho has run out of patience with the England international, often preferring Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo at the heart of his defence this season.

And it seems there will be no shortage of suitors if Smalling is put up for sale this summer, with West Ham and West Brom both said to be in contention.

Hammers boss Slaven Bilic is reportedly planning to reshape his back line this coming transfer window, with Manchester City right-back Pablo Zabaleta expected to arrive at the London Stadium.

But the Baggies are also understood to be seeking defensive reinforcements and the 27-year-old could have a difficult decision to make.

Born just over the river from West Ham’s new home in Greenwich, Smalling may to fancy a return south if he is to leave Manchester, although a move to West Brom would see him reunite with Jonny Evans – his former defensive colleague at Old Trafford.
