Winston Reid is arguably West Ham United’s best defender, and the Hammers are seemingly willing to reward him for that.

A report in the Daily Mirror has claimed that West Ham are ready to reward Winston Reid with a new contract at the London Stadium that would see him earn more than £70,000 a week.

According to the Mirror, the Hammers hierarchy plan to offer a number of their important players new contracts that take them into the same sort of pay bracket as Jose Fonte, who signed a deal worth £70,000 a week following his Southampton switch in January.

Reid – whose current deal runs until 2021 – is one of those players set to be handed fresh terms, as is current top goalscorer Michail Antonio, according to the Mirror.

While Reid’s current contract has a significant amount of time to run, it is perhaps not that great a surprise that he is set to be rewarded.

The 28-year-old is arguably West Ham’s best and most reliable defender, so tying him down to terms that he is happy with could be a major boost as he continues to enjoy what should be the best years of his career.

But Hammers supporters will be hoping that the fact that the Mirror suggests a cluster of players will be in line for new deals does not hurt their chances of doing some good business when the summer window opens.

Slaven Bilic’s side endured a terrible summer last year, and the last thing the Irons faithful will want is for his transfer plans to be harmed because some of the money has been spent on giving some members of the current squad new deals, especially if those other members are not as deserving as Reid or Antonio.
