Report: West Ham tell Fulham they’ll pay £20m for Tom Cairney

West Ham United are keen to bring Tom Cairney in from Fulham during the final days of the January transfer window.

According to a report from The Sun, West Ham have informed Fulham that they would be willing to pay £20 million for Tom Cairney after having their initial bid for the playmaker rejected.

Cairney is one of the most exciting players in the Championship. While his tally of one goal and three assists this term does not look too impressive on paper, he has arguably still been one of Fulham’s best players this season after a campaign where he inspired the Cottagers to the play-off semi-finals with 13 goals and 10 assists.

The Sun reports that the Hammers made a £15 million bid for the Scotland international, but that has since been rejected by Slavisa Jokanovic’s side.

And The Sun adds that the Irons have informed Fulham that they are prepared to increase that offer by a further £5 million – though, judging by previous reports, that will be nowhere near enough to convince the Championship side into accepting.

A previous report from The Sun suggested that the Cottagers are only willing to let Cairney leave the club if they receive an offer of £30 million for the midfielder.

With that report also highlighting that Cairney is under a long-term contract at Craven Cottage, it would be no surprise if West Ham being willing to increase their offer to £20 million did little to tempt them into considering a sale.
