According to Wales Online, West Ham United still have a chance of signing Swansea City’s Alfie Mawson – but Burnley are leading the race.

West Ham have been linked with the talented centre-back and the same publication reported in June that Swansea had rejected a bid by the Hammers.

The trail has gone cold in recent weeks and Wales Online report that Burnley are in negotiations with City over signing the £20 million-rated star.

However, the report adds that West Ham are “still in the frame” despite Burnley’s position.

The 24-year-old is still injured after suffering a knee problem toward the end of last season but speculation remains rife nevertheless.

If Mawson had a choice, you wonder if he’d struggle to turn down West Ham and join Manuel Pellegrini’s side.

Burnley had a brilliant 2017-18 campaign under Sean Dyche but the Irons have done some serious business this summer, breaking their transfer record twice – first with Issa Diop and then Felipe Anderson.

Pellegrini is building a major project in East London and you could argue that the Chilean would complete the jigsaw by signing him.

He clearly wants another centre-back, having being rebuffed by Newcastle for Jamaal Lascelles a fortnight ago [Sky Sports], so perhaps Mawson is the final piece.
