The Hammers have reportedly been rebuffed by Saint-Etienne.

West Ham United have seen a late approach for Saint-Etienne defender Kevin Malcuit rejected, according to Le 10 Sport.

The Hammers are thought to be in the market for a new right-back, with summer signing Alvari Arbeloa not up to scratch and Sam Byram having struggled with injuries.

Slaven Bilic has resorted to using winger Michail Antonio on the right-hand side of defence for much of the season, but the club is likely to be keen to bring a specialist in that position to London Stadium.

Co-chairman David Gold reminded supporters last week not to forget about the talents of Byram as concern rose amongst fans over the future of the club’s right-back spot.

According to Le 10 Sport, West Ham had identified Saint-Etienne star Malcuit as a primary late target, but their approach with an offer of around £8 million for the 25-year-old has been turned down.

Malcuit has been impressing for Saint-Etienne, and would also bring the added benefit of genuine versatility, being able to play at right wing as well as in the backline.

However, it appears as though the Irons will have to extend any offer to eight digits if they are hoping to bring the under-the-radar star to East London before tomorrow night’s transfer deadline.

Saint-Etienne are clearly playing hardball, and West Ham will now have to decide whether they are willing to stay in the market and pay over the odds for Malcuit, or try to refocus their chase for a right-back over the next 24 hours or so.

West Ham have signed a defender this month in the form of Southampton captain Jose Fonte, and he outlined his reasons for joining the club last week.
