West Ham United tried to sign Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe during the January transfer window.
Sunderland’s Jermain Defoe
A report in The Sun has suggested that West Ham plan to make another move for Jermain Defoe during the summer transfer window, and may be able to sign him on a free transfer.
Defoe has enjoyed an excellent season personally, having scored 14 times in 28 Premier League games for Sunderland to earn a recall to the England side four years after his previous appearance.
However, his desire to stay in Gareth Southgate’s plans may perhaps tempt him to move away from the Stadium of Light in the summer if the Black Cats are relegated, which is looking more than likely at the moment with David Moyes’ men seven points off safety with 10 games to go.
And should they go down, The Sun suggests that they could suffer another major blow as Defoe would be able to leave the club for nothing.
Unsurprisingly given his form, his signature is likely to be chased with The Sun suggesting the Hammers are ready to swoop for the striker they sold to Tottenham 13 years ago.

West Ham were interested in Defoe in January but ultimately decided against a move after Sunderland made it clear that they had no plans to cash in (via Telegraph).
But if they go down, and West Ham offer the 34-year-old the chance to stay in the Premier League, then it seems difficult to imagine that Defoe will not decide to grasp the opportunity.
