West Ham United are said to have had a bid turned down for the Newcastle United captain.

West Ham United have ‘gone back in’ for Swansea City’s Alfie Mawson after ‘pulling out of a chase’ for Newcastle United’s Jamaal Lascelles, according to the Sun (July 12, page 57).
And the report claims the Hammers are ‘ready to pay Swansea £20 million’ for Mawson, having also been turned down by Lyon’s Marcelo.
West Ham have already spent in excess of that figure on another centre-back, Issa Diop, from Toulouse.
But with Reece Burke following James Collins out of the London Stadium, and uncertainty surrounding the future of some others, there is some logic to the Hammers’ alleged Mawson pursuit.

The Northern Echo reports Newcastle intend to keep Lascelles no matter what West Ham offer, having already turned down a bid of £20 million plus add-ons for their captain.
And Mawson should be easier to prise away from Swansea after the Welsh side’s relegation last season.
Is the Swansea defender a suitable alternative to Newcastle United’s?
