West Ham United are reportedly being put off a move for Newcastle United’s Jonjo Shelvey.
According to The Sun, West Ham United have been put off a move for Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey due to his £90,000-a-week wage packet.
The Hammers have enjoyed a real upturn in form under David Moyes, and whilst the focus will be on pushing for the top half, additions will be targeted this month to ensure West Ham don’t end up back in a relegation battle.
Manager Moyes needs to find at least one midfielder, given that Mark Noble, Cheikhou Kouyate and Pedro Obiang need competition in the middle of the park, and a host of names have been linked.
Now, The Sun report that West Ham have considered a move to bring in Newcastle midfielder Jonjo Shelvey – but are being put off by his £90,000-a-week wages.
Shelvey, 25, joined Newcastle from Swansea City two years ago, and has had something of an up-and-down season, given questions over his discipline after two red cards.
The midfielder has earned plaudits for his long-range shooting ability and his ability to pick out passes, but he has yet to register a goal or an assist this season as the Magpies struggle for results.
Some fans may have been open to selling Shelvey this month, but with West Ham balking at his wages, a move to the London Stadium appears to be unlikely right now if reports are to be believed.
Shelvey grew up supporting West Ham and would surely have been open to a return to London, but unless there is some sort of movement on his wages, the midfielder looks to be staying at St. James’ Park.
