According to the Daily Mail, West Ham United are interested in a summer swoop for Fleetwood Town goalkeeper Alex Cairns.

The Hammers have had issues in goal throughout the season, with Adrian losing his place between the sticks to Darren Randolph earlier in the campaign, before the Spaniard won his place back against Everton on Saturday.

With neither goalkeeper proving that they are the long-term solution in goal for West Ham, Slaven Bilic – or whoever is in charge of the Hammers next season – may look to move for a new goalkeeper, with a surprise name linked.

The Daily Mail claim that Fleetwood Town goalkeeper Alex Cairns is now on West Ham’s radar ahead of the summer transfer window, with a view to making a move for him.

Cairns, 24, came up through the ranks with Leeds United alongside current West Ham right back Sam Byram, but was released in 2015 after making just one first-team appearance for the Whites.

Spells with Chesterfield and Rotherham United followed, before Fleetwood moved to sign Cairns last summer as a replacement for Chris Maxwell, who left the Cod Army to join Preston North End.

So far, Cairns has proven to be a more than adequate replacement, conceding just 20 goals in 29 games, whilst keeping a huge 15 clean sheets in that span to help Fleetwood’s push for promotion to the Championship.

West Ham allegedly view Cairns as a player they can develop over the coming years, and whilst he is contracted with Fleetwood until 2018, the Hammers could attempt a move for the goalkeeper this summer – especially if Uwe Rosler’s men miss out on promotion from League One.
