According to The Sun, West Ham United want to re-sign Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe – and the Daily Mail report that a cash-plus-player offer could be on the cards.
The Hammers are in desperate need for a new striker, as summer signings Jonathan Calleri and Simone Zaza – on loan from Deportivo Maldonado and Juventus respectively – have yet to score even one goal for the club.

Andy Carroll is back from injury but has yet to prove that he can stay fit for a whole season, whilst Diafra Sakho is on the treatment table and Ashley Fletcher is one for the future, meaning manager Slaven Bilic desperately needs goals.
Now, The Sun report that West Ham are keen on an old face, as they want to bring Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe back to East London in a shock deal.

Defoe, now 34, joined West Ham from Charlton Athletic way back in 1999, and scored 41 goals in 105 games for the Hammers before heading off to London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in 2004.
Now at Sunderland, the diminutive striker continues to score goals in the Premier League, as he’s hit eight goals in 18 appearances this season, which has seemingly triggered West Ham’s interest.
The Daily Mail add that West Ham could look to tempt Sunderland into a deal by offering a part-exchange, with a player potentially being offered to the Black Cats along with cash for the veteran striker.
Given that Defoe is Sunderland’s main hope in terms of achieving Premier League survival, they surely won’t want to lose him, and West Ham must be wary of spending too much money on an ageing striker, as much as he’d solve their immediate goalscoring problems.
