West Ham United made a cheeky approach to try and land Tottenham Hotspur manager target Luis Enrique earlier this season.
That is according to a report from The Guardian, who claim that West Ham did contact a number of managers this term.
Thomas Tuchel and Mauricio Pochettino weren’t interested as the Hammers considered replacements for David Moyes.
West Ham also allegedly turned to Enrique and even Unai Emery, before his move from Villarreal to Aston Villa.
However, none of them were keen and West Ham have chosen to stick with David Moyes.
That’s partly because West Ham have appreciated Moyes’ work over the years and believes he deserves some time.
It’s also partly because West Ham just haven’t been able to land a top replacement for the Scot this season.
Enrique wasn’t interested and Moyes looks set to see out the season as West Ham boss despite the relegation fears.
West Ham could now see Luis Enrique join a London rival
It’s unclear just when West Ham asked about Enrique, but we can only assume it was after he left his post as Spain boss.
Enrique had guided Spain to the last 16 of the World Cup, but they were knocked out by Morocco.
Enrique left his job and is now seeking a first club role since leaving Barcelona in 2017.
The 52-year-old may still be on West Ham’s shortlist for an ambitious summer move, but he is wanted by other London clubs.
The Independent reported earlier this month that Enrique, has been in London for talks with Chelsea.
The Blues are chasing a replacement for Graham Potter and Enrique appears to be a strong contender.
90Min also claimed earlier in April that Enrique has been in contact with Tottenham about their vacancy.
Spurs are a bit of a mess right now but Enrique is at least interested in what Daniel Levy and co have to say.
It will be hard for West Ham to go up against Chelsea and Spurs for Enrique and it ultimately seems unlikely that the 2015 Champions League winner will head to East London.
