West Ham United are reportedly hoping to agree a new long-term contract with the playmaker.
According to a report from Sky Sports, West Ham are hoping to agree a new contract with Manuel Lanzini, despite the Hammers currently being able to keep the Argentinian until 2022.
Lanzini is continuing to work his way back towards full sharpness having spent much of last season on the sidelines with an injury that had ruled him out of the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
He made 10 Premier League appearances last term following his return, and he has started both of Manuel Pellegrini’s side’s games at the start of this campaign. It was Lanzini who provided the assist for Javier Hernandez in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Brighton.
Sky Sports reports that Lanzini’s deal at the London Stadium expires next summer, but the Irons have an option to extend his terms by a further two years. Nevertheless, West Ham are keen to tie him down for even longer.
The report adds that the Hammers were waiting to see how the playmaker got on following his return from injury before making a decision on whether to extend his deal.
So it would appear that they have been very pleased with the comeback that he has made.
It would be a big boost for West Ham to agree a contract extension with Lanzini. They have not made the best start to the new campaign, but they have a lot of quality in the final third and can bounce back in some style if everything clicks.
Pablo Fornals and Sebastien Haller were the marquee additions this summer, but Lanzini still looks to be one of the key men that the Irons turn to when the chips are down, so it would be a real statement to agree a new contract that would see the 26-year-old commit to spending what should be the best years of his career with the club.
