Sky Sports have claimed that West Ham United are in talks to sign Sheffield United midfielder John Fleck for a bargain £4million before Thursday’s 11pm deadline.

Fleck, 27, has missed just one Championship fixture all season for the Blades, providing the engine in Chris Wilder’s side at the base of their midfield. His never-ending stamina has proved effective in the middle of the park.

Sheffield United currently sit in third place after holding back second-placed Norwich City to a 2-2 draw, and a lot of their excellent form can be contributed to Fleck’s involvement.

West Ham have seemingly recognised that, and have opened talks to sign the ex-Rangers and Coventry City midfielder for a fee believed to be in the region of £4million.

Fleck began his career at Ibrox, breaking into the side as a youngster and making 55 appearances before leaving after the financial collapse in 2012. He joined Coventry, where he played 182 times before signing for the Blades in July 2016.

He has remained with Sheffield United since, playing an instrumental part in his first season by helping them get promoted back to the Championship as League One champions. He scored four goals, and created a huge 20 assists.

West Ham need another midfielder, with Manuel Lanzini, Jack Wilshere and Carlos Sanchez all on the sidelines. It remains to be seen when any of the crocked trio will return, though Lanzini is back in training.
