West Ham United have reportedly sent scouts to watch Francesco Vicari and may make a move for the SPAL defender in January.

According to a report from Calciomercato, West Ham have been impressed with what they have seen from SPAL defender Francesco Vicari and are contemplating making a move for the 23-year-old during the January transfer window.

The Hammers currently boast the joint-worst defensive record in the Premier League, with the three goals they conceded against Tottenham on Saturday taking their tally of goals let in to 13 for the campaign.

And it appears that Slaven Bilic is looking at potential solutions to their defensive struggles, with Calciomercato reporting that the Irons have sent scouts to watch Vicari in action.

The former Italy under-21 international is playing in his first season in Serie A, after helping SPAL secure promotion last season.

And while SPAL’s start to the campaign has not caught the imagination – they sit a few places above the relegation zone, with one win, one draw and four defeats coming so far – it appears that West Ham have seen something in the former Novara man.

Calciomercato reports that Vicari impressed the West Ham scouts and they are now considering returning to Italy to have another look at the centre-back and potentially making a move to bring him to the London Stadium in January.

Based on SPAL’s start to the season however, it seems unlikely that rumours linking Vicari with a move to the Premier League will excite West Ham fans at this stage.

But he is young enough to develop further and is still only a few months into his top flight career, so perhaps he will become a player that West Ham fans would be delighted to see sign for the club at some point.
