Report: West Ham hope Andy Carroll could return this season

West Ham United are holding out a small hope that Andy Carroll will be back available just before the end of the season.

According to a report from the Daily Mirror, West Ham are hoping that they may be able to call upon Andy Carroll for the final two games of the season having initially feared that the striker would be out until the summer.

Carroll’s future with the Irons appeared to be up in the air during the January transfer window, with the Mirror reporting that Chelsea were eyeing a move for the former Liverpool man. However, a hairline fracture of his ankle scuppered any hope that the 29-year-old may have had of making the switch to Stamford Bridge.

The Mirror reports that the Irons expected Carroll to be out for the rest of the season with the injury, but there is now optimism that he may have a chance of being ready for the games against Leicester City and Everton.

Boost for Moyes?

It has been a hugely frustrating season for Carroll. As well as his injury, the form that he was showing before he got sidelined was extremely disappointing – with two goals coming in 12 top flight appearances this term.

However, the fact that those two goals came in the one game – the 2-1 victory over West Bromwich Albion at the start of January – is arguably the reason that having the Englishman back for the final two fixtures of the season is still a positive.

The relegation battle is still incredibly tight and there is every chance that it could go right down to the wire – and with West Ham four points clear of the bottom three and facing a hugely difficult run, they may be concerned that they may need the full 38 games to guarantee their survival.

And should it go down to the wire, having Carroll back in the fold ready to give David Moyes’ men a different option may prove to be a massive boost as he has shown that, on his day, he can be a game-changer.
