According to Sport1, West Ham have held talks over the signing of Niklas Stark, with David Moyes a big fan of the defender.
What’s the story?
Well, West Ham are hoping to find cover for Angelo Ogbonna, who sadly suffered a serious knee injury in the 3-2 win over Liverpool.
Sport1 believe the Hammers have identified Stark as an option, with the 26-year-old set to become a free agent in June.
In that respect, Hertha Berlin must either sell him in January, or risk losing him for nothing in the summer unless fresh terms are agreed.
Sport1 add that talks have already taken place between West Ham and the Bundesliga outfit, with the Irons hoping to conclude a January deal.
Stark is said to be ‘indispensable’ for Hertha Berlin, with Sport1 describing a potential January exit as the ‘worst case’ scenario for Sporting Director Fredi Bobic.
Sport1 also claim that Moyes sees a lot of potential in the centre-back, and is keen to bring him to the London Stadium.
What can Niklas Stark offer West Ham?
Well, by the sounds of it, West Ham could be getting a bargain.
Stark has two caps for Germany, which in itself is a fine achievement given the level of talent that emerges from the nation.
The Hertha Berlin No.5 has also captained the side in some games this season, so he’s clearly someone Moyes could potentially count on as a leader.
Above all, the financial benefits of this deal are the most attractive aspect.
With his contract set to expire, Stark is available for a cut-price fee this Winter, so even if he fails in east London, it won’t hit West Ham too hard.
There are plenty of positives regarding this rumour, and hopefully, West Ham can get a deal done quickly before they feel the effects of Ogbonna’s absence.
