According to El Intransigente, West Ham United have a proposal on the table for River Plate defender Gonzalo Montiel.

It’s claimed that Montiel has numerous offers to pick through ahead of his contract expiring this summer.

West Ham are believed to have made an offer towards Montiel, but so have Lyon as well as Italian duo Bologna and Roma.

That means there is a real battle emerging for Montiel, and last night’s Copa Libertadores semi-final exit at the hands of Palmeiras makes an exit all the more likely.

West Ham have been linked with Montiel for a long time now, but how much do they really need another right back at the moment?

Vladimir Coufal has become a fan favourite at West Ham since arriving from Slavia Prague, making the right back spot his own.

Montiel could make some sense as a signing if Ryan Fredericks were to move on, and West Ham may see him as a bargain addition that would free up Fredericks to leave.

The 24-year-old River star is quick and full of running, offering an attacking threat as well as being quick on the cover, whilst he also has six caps for Argentina.

If a spot is available for him, Montiel could be a superb free transfer signing for West Ham – but there is huge competition for him.
