West Ham already have competition for Benfica midfielder Julian Weigl, with Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach now interested in signing the Germany international.
According to Sky Germany, Die Fohlen are working on a deal to sign the 26-year-old, who could be set to leave Portugal after two years in Lisbon and getting his career back on track after becoming a star player for Benfica since arriving from Borussia Dortmund in 2020.
As per the report, though, Gladbach are not ready to match Benfica’s €15m (£12m) asking price for Weigl, with West Ham also interested in signing the Germany maestro, with the Irons looking to find a replacement for club legend Mark Noble, who left the east London side at the end of last season.
Whilst Weigl has been somewhat out of the limelight for the past two years since moving to Portugal, the midfielder is still highly-regarded around Europe, with Toni Kroos once tipping the Bavarian midfielder he could become ‘world-class’ one day in the future.
Indeed, with Gladbach now interested in Weigl, West Ham face some serious competition for the Benfica star, however, with recent reports suggesting that the Irons have made a £34m bid to sign LOSC Lille midfielder Amadou Onana, the German club could now have a free shot at the former Dortmund star.
With Weigl seemingly available for transfer and West Ham launching a big offer to sign Onana, Gladbach could now sneak in and bring the German back to his homeland in a deal that could be one of the best the Bundesliga side can possibly make this summer.
West Ham signing Onana gives Gladbach free reign to land Weigl

West Ham have seemingly made their decision on who they want to sign this summer with the club pushing hard to bring Onana to the London Stadium, and for Gladbach, this gives the German giants to land a coup this summer in Weigl, who could change the Bundesliga side’s fortunes for the upcoming season.
With no European football yet again for the campaign, Gladbach are in need of a spark of inspiration, and bringing Weigl to Borussia-Park would do just that, with a deal now likely if they can lower Benfica’s asking price in the coming weeks.
