Report: West Ham eye ‘world-class’ £16m star, Irons chief knows him well

West Ham are reportedly showing interest in signing RB Leipzig defender Angelino, who could leave the Bundesliga giants this summer following the arrival of David Raum from Hoffenheim.

According to La Voz de Galicia, Leipzig are eager to offload Angelino before the closure of the transfer window to balance out the squad and the recoup some transfer funds following the big-money signing of Raum, with West Ham one of the sides interested in the Spanish left-back.

Angelino came through at Manchester City and was signed by the club by West Ham’s now head of recruitment Rob Newman, who at the time was an international scout for the five-time Premier League champions, with the fullback since going on to have an impressive career in Europe.

Hailed as a ‘world-class’ defender by Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann during their time together at Leipzig, Angelino has been a key player for the east German side for the past two seasons, yet with Raum now being signed, the defender could look for a new challenge in Europe, and West Ham could be perfect for the 25-year-old.

With the Irons once again competing in Europe in the form of the UEFA Europa Conference League, Angelino could be tempted to return to England to join West Ham, especially with David Moyes making some top signings this summer in the form of Nayef Aguerd and Gianluca Scamacca.

Indeed, with Leipzig only signing Angelino for a reported £16m, the Bundesliga side could allow the defender to leave for a similar fee this summer, and for West Ham, the defender could be an unbelievable addition to the squad and an incredible long-term replacement for Aaron Cresswell.

West Ham should be going all out to sign Angelino

At 32-years-old, West Ham should be looking to replace Cresswell in the long term, and Angelino could be ideal for the east London side in almost every department, with the Galicia-born fullback perfect for the modern game and for Moyes’ style of play.

Athletic and technically gifted, Angelino could become a real threat for West Ham if the club make a move to sign the defender, and with Scamacca now the Irons’ leading man upfront the Italian could have the perfect provider for goals should Moyes pull the trigger to bring the fullback to England.
