West Ham United appear to be hoping that this latest move will tempt Marseille to make a move.

According to The Sun, West Ham have dropped their asking price for Dimitri Payet in the hope that they can convince Marseille to bring an end to the saga involving the Frenchman.

The Sun reports that the Hammers had been willing to do a deal for the 29-year-old provided that the Ligue 1 side had offered £30 million for their former player.

But while Marseille made two bids for the playmaker, The Sun reports that the Irons knocked them both back, with the most recent seeing the club putting £20 million on the table.

Though West Ham were unwilling to give a deal the green light for that price, The Sun suggests that they are now willing to reach a compromise by lowering their asking price in an attempt to bring the curtain down on what has been an ugly chapter for the Premier League side.

Although Slaven Bilic may be disappointed about the idea of losing the man who has been the club’s best player since his arrival, it makes little sense to keep him when he is so unhappy as poor performances over the coming months could see his value plummet, especially as his 30th birthday is just around the corner.

And if the Irons do end up getting £25 million for him, there is still enough time this month to make the kind of additions to their squad that would make the decision to sell Payet look like a very smart call indeed.
